Section 125: Speech & Drama – Solo – Lyric Poetry

Section Notes

  2. Competitors should refer to their local library for selections.
  3. Solo speech selections must be memorized. Selections may be used in one class only.
  4. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  5. Own choice of a Lyric Poem. A Lyric Poem is contemplative; it is an expression of the inner thoughts or feelings of the speaker in the poem. Lyric Poetry is not dramatized. Therefore, costumes and props are not appropriate for this class.
  6. Participants will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office.
  7. All classes in the section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial Competition (upon Adjudicator recommendation) in June, 2021.

Section Notes

  5. Own Choice. A narrative poem tells a story. It is delivered directly to an audience as if the speaker is sharing a story. Gestures are allowed for emphasis, but the poem is not dramatized.
  6. Participants will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office.
  7. All classes in the section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial Competition (upon Adjudicator recommendation) in June, 2021.

  2. There are three types of dramatic monologues: Monologues that address an audience directly; Soliloquies spoken as if the character is alone (revealing inner thoughts; and Speeches directed to another character.

Section Notes

  1. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Memorized prose selection (fiction, non-fiction or sacred text) from a published source. Standing or seated in a relaxed but controlled position, the soloist delivers the selection, making eye contact with the audience. The performer may use gestures for emphasis and, if the prose contains dialogue, should make a vocal distinction between the speakers in the dialogue and the voice of the narrator.

Edit the story for length, then retell the story in your own words, from a standing or sitting position. Provide the text, with the original story, for the adjudicator. Good stories may be found in:
