Section 1: Classical Piano Solo – Senior – Open (ARCT & Above)

- No age limit.
- Refer to Rules 11, 12, 13, 18, 20, 21, 23, 37, 40 and 47. Read all Syllabus rules and regulations with care.
- Competitors entering Open classes may not enter Section 2 (Advanced) classes or Section 6 (Graded) classes..
- A competitor wishing to play a concerto must enter Section 8 Concertos.
- All music in this section must be of at least ARCT, Licentiate, or equivalent level (not necessarily on current lists). Grade 10 or lower not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM and Conservatory Canada lists.
- Entrants hoping to proceed to Provincials (June, 2023) should enter classes marked with (“P”). Please note that only competitors under the age of 28 can proceed to Provincials in this category. Competitors aged 29 and over who wish to go to Provincials should enter classes in Section 11.
- To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of TWO classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
- Accurate performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
- Participants have the option to participate either “in person” or “virtually”. This decision must be made at the time of registration.
- Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.
Class 10001 – Piano Solo – Concert Group – ARCT & Above
Fee: $90.00
Entrants are given the opportunity of presenting a mini-recital. They will be judged on the discrimination shown in the choice of programme, as well as on interpretation and technique. Variety in content with regard to period, style, key, etc., will taken into consideration. A minimum of 3 pieces is required. Please note that this class does not qualify for the Provincial Finals.

Class 10002 – Piano Solo – Haydn/Mozart Sonata – ARCT & Above (“P”)

Any sonata (complete) composed by either Haydn or Mozart. Competitors in this class may not enter Classes 10050-10055.

Class 10003 – Piano Solo – Beethoven Sonata – ARCT & Above (“P”)

An entire sonata drawn from the following list: Op. 2 (No. 2 or 3), Op. 7, 10 (no. 3), 22, 26, Op. 27 (no. 2), Op. 31, 53, 54, 57, 78, 81a, 90, 101, 106, 109, 110, 111. Competitors in this class may not enter Class 4-01.

Class 10008 – Piano Solo – Impressionist – ARCT & Above (“P”)

A work (or sections from a grouping) by any one composer allied with the Impressionist School (since 1887) such as Debussy, Delius, Ravel.

Class 10009 – Piano Solo – Russian Composer – ARCT & Above (“P”)

Any piece written by a Russian Composer that is not a sonata nor a concerto, written after 1900.

Own choice of a composition written since 1950 by a Canadian composer. If the piece is no well known, competitors must provide a copy for the adjudicator. If in manuscript form, it must be legible. Email to the festival office at office@kiwanismusictoronto.org

One selection as listed in the Current RCM/Conservatory Canada Piano ARCT, List A requirements. Any standard edition except Schirmer.
Time limit: 25 minutes
Class 10017 – J.S. Bach – Suites and Partitas (“P”)
Fee: $48.00
Any 3 contrasting mvts. (to include a slow mvt.) from a Suite or Partita or the Italian Concerto. The Sinfonia or Partita No. 2 will be accepted as 3 mvts.
Time limit: 25 minutes
Section 2: Classical Piano Solo – Advanced – ARCT
Section Notes
- Competitors must be age 18 or under.
- Refer to Rules 11, 12, 13, 18, 20, 21, 23, 37, 40 and 47. Read all Syllabus rules and regulations with care.
- Competitors entering Intermediate classes may not enter Open classes (Section 1).
- Advanced classes are offered for competitors who are studying at the Conservatory Associate Level but have NOT completed the Associate Diploma as of December 31st, 2022. Competitors entering the Advanced section can only have been studying at the ARCT/A.Mus. level for 2 years or less. If the competitor has been studying at this level longer than 2 years they must enter the Open Class.
- A competitor in a concerto class may also act as accompanist for another competitor.
- All music used in this section must be as listed in the ARCT syllabus. Pieces listed in the licentiate syllabus are not permitted. Pieces that are Grade 10 or lower are not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM lists. Competitors wishing to use Licentiate pieces must enter Open (Section 1).
- Eligible classes for the Provincial competition (June, 2023) in Advanced classes are marked with the letter “P”.
- To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
- Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
- Participants have the option to participate either “in person” or “virtually”. This decision must be made at the time of registration.
- Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.

- If work chosen is in hand-written form, it must be legible.
- Works must be performed as written out.
- There will be two adjudicators for this class. One will mark the composition, the other will mark the performance. The marks will be averaged to determine the final mark.
- Piano only – no other instruments or vocals.
- Compositions must be received no later than February 5th by emailing them to office@kiwanismusictoronto.org.
- Performers are encouraged to use music.
- Competitors wishing to qualify for the Provincial Music Festival (June, 2023) must enter appropriate classes in Open (Section 1), Advanced (Section 2), or Graded Pieces (Section 6). Classes in this section do not qualify for Provincials.

- All Classes from grades 1 to 10 (except for Introductory and Chopin Etudes) will have the opportunity to progress to the Provincial competition held in June 2023. These classes are marked with (“P”)
- Please note that in all Study/Etude classes (10086, 10091, 10096, 10100, 10104, 10108, 10112, 10116, 10120 and 10124) memorization is encouraged but not required.
- Unlike the RCM rules, the Toronto Kiwanis Festival does not allow popular selections to be used in study classes. If you want to play a popular selection, please enter Section 15 – Popular Piano Solos.

- “Teacher’s Choice” pieces are not permitted.

- Entrants are given the opportunity of presenting a mini-recital. They will be judged on the discrimination shown in the choice of programme, as well as on interpretation and technique. Variety in content with regard to period, style, key, etc. will be taken into consideration.

- Competitors in this section may not enter Open (Section 1) or Advanced (Section 2).
- A piece of music, whether prescribed or own choice, cannot be used by a competitor in more than one class. Repertoire which does not coincide with stated categories will result in disqualification. See Rule 23.
- Competitors wishing to qualify for the Provincial Music Festival (June, 2023) must enter appropriate classes in Open (Section 1), Advanced (Section 2), Graded (Section 6). This section does not qualify for Provincials.
- To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
