Section 75: Musical Theatre Solos – Traditional (Before 1950)

Section Notes

  1. Refer to rules 11, 16, 18, 22, 23, 30 and 47.  Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Own choice of a song from a music theatre stage production only. Selections from revues or workshops are not permitted. Operetta (i.e. Gilbert & Sullivan and Herbert) must be entered into Section 51 and songs from animated or musical films must be entered into Section 84.
  3. Selections may be performed in a key suitable for the voice.
  4. Piano accompaniment only.
  5. Costumes are permitted.
  6. One stage prop and one hand prop are permitted as long as no set-up is required.
  7. Songs chosen by competitors must be age-appropriate. Disregarding this rule could result in disqualification.
  8. All classes in this section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial level of competition (June, 2022).  Please note that for the Open category of Provincials 5 songs will be required.  All other levels will require 2 songs.
  9. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  10. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  11. Participants will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office.

Section 83: Music Theatre – Ensembles

Section Notes

  2. Own choice of a song from a recognized musical theatre production or feature animated film.
  3. The ensemble must consist of a minimum of four contestants to a maximum of ten contestants. The average of the ages of all participants must be equal or be less than the category entered.
  4. Selections chosen by the ensemble can only be entered into one age group level.
  5. A maximum of one minute of dialogue is allowed.
  6. Piano accompaniment only. Conductors not permitted
  7. One stage prop and one hand prop are permitted as long as no set-up is required.
  8. Time Limit: 15 minutes
  9. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  10.  Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  11. Participants will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office.
  12. It is the competitor’s responsibility to abide by any and all government guidelines regarding physical distancing as of the date you submit your video.

  2. Own choice of one song.  a song from a Cabaret or Musical Revue. Selections from staged musical theatre productions are not permitted. Songs may be from a staged musical theatre production, an animated or musical film or a cabaret/revue. 
  3. This category is non-competitive – no marks will be given.  It is also intended that participants in this class have not participated in any festivals in previous years.
  4. Selections may be performed in a key suitable for the voice.
  5. Piano accompaniment only.
  6. Costumes are permitted.
  7. One stage prop and one hand prop are permitted as long as no set-up is required.
  8. Songs chosen by competitors must be age-appropriate. Disregarding this rule could result in disqualification.
  9. Please note that this category is not eligible for Provincials.
  10. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  11. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  12. Participants will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office.
