Section 160: Jazz Ensembles

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 11 and 18, except that scores are not required. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. 21 members or more. Instrumentation: any combination of instruments.
  3. Repertoire: own choice of two contrasting selections. No vocalist allowed except in classes 160-06 and 160-07.
  4. Time limit 15 minutes.
  5. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  6. All classes in this section are eligible to be recommended to the Provincial Finals Recorded Competition.

Section 161: Stage Bands

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 11 and 18, except that scores are not required. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. 10 to 25 members. Recommended instrumentation: 4-5 trumpets, 4-5 trombones, 5 saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 baritone), piano and/or synthesizer, guitar, bass drums, auxiliary percussion (optional). Vocalist is optional.
  3. Repertoire: own choice of two contrasting selections (e.g. medium swing and a ballad). Only one selection may feature a vocalist. Selections should allow for partially or fully improvised solos.
  4. Time limit 15 minutes.
  5. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  6. All classes in this section are eligible to be recommended to the Provincial Finals Recorded Competition.

Section 162: Jazz Combos

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 11 and 18, except that scores are not required. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Maximum 9 instruments. No minimum. Combos will normally consist of any combination of vocalist, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano and/or guitar, bass and drums. Less usual instruments such as violin, flute or clarinet may be used. Bass players are encouraged to perform on double bass.
  3. Repertoire: own choice of two contrasting selections within the modern acoustic jazz tradition (swing, bebop, hard bop, cool, post bop, Latin, mainstream, avant-garde, etc.). Compositions may be ‘standards’ or ‘originals’. Solos must be improvised.
  4. Time limit 15 minutes.
  5. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  6. All classes in this section are eligible to be recommended to the Provincial Finals Recorded Competition.

Section 163: Traditional Jazz Combos

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 11 and 18, except that scores are not required. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Instrumentation: any combination of trumpet or cornet, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, guitar or banjo, double bass or tuba, piano, drums. Vocalist is optional.
  3. Repertoire: own choice of two contrasting selections within the traditional acoustic jazz tradition (early blues, ‘trad’ style, Chicago style, New Orleans style, Dixieland, etc.) Compositions may be ‘standards’ or ‘originals’. Solos must be improvised.
  4. Time limit 15 minutes.
  5. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  6. All classes in this section are eligible to be recommended to the Provincial Finals Recorded Competition.

Section 164: Vocal Jazz Ensembles

Section Notes

  2. Recommended instrumentation: 4-16 vocalists, piano, and/or synthesizer, guitar, bass, drums, auxiliary percussion (optional). Use of a solo instrument (trumpet, trombone, saxophone) is optional.
  3. Repertoire: own choice of two selections (e.g. medium swing and a ballad). Where appropriate, solos should be partially or fully improvised.
  4. The Festival will not be responsible for the provision of microphones or soundboards. Individual competitors may make their own arrangements for obtaining such equipment.
  5. Time limit 10 minutes.
  6. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
