Double Bass - Open

  1. Refer to Rules 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 24, 49, 52, 64 and 80. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. All music in this section must be of at least ARCT or equivalent level (not necessarily on current lists). Grade 10 or lower not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM and Conservatory Canada lists. Competitors may not enter Advanced or Graded classes.
  3. All selections must be played from memory except in classes 43004.
  4. A piece cannot be used by a competitor in more than one class. Repertoire which does not coincide with stated categories will result in disqualification. See Rule 24.
  5. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  6. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  7. Participants have the option to participate either "in person" or "virtually". This decision must be made at the time of registration.
  8. Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.
  9. All classes (except 43001) in this section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial level of competition (June, 2024) upon adjudicator recommendation. Participants should be aware that a minimum of 3 pieces are required for the Provincial Finals and that the Provincial's registration deadline will be March 25, 2024.
Class:43001 - Concert Group - ARCT and Above

Two unrelated selections (multiple movements not permitted).
Time limit: 25 minutes.
No repeats are to be played.

Class:43002 - Concerto for Double Bass & Orchestra - Romantic or Modern

One or two consecutive movements from a romantic or modern concerto written for double bass.
Time limit: 25 minutes
No repeats are to be played.

Class:43003 - Concerto for Double Bass & Orchestra - Classical

One or two consecutive mvts. from a classical concerto written for double bass.
Time limit: 25 minutes
No repeats are to be played.

One or two movements of a Sonata.
Time limit: 25 minutes

Own choice of one selection.

Two contrasting movements or the Chaconne from an unaccompanied Sonata, Partita or Suite.
