Advanced Piano

  1. Competitors must be age 18 or under.
  2. Refer to Rules 111, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 24, 49, 52, 64 and 80. Read all Syllabus rules and regulations with care.
  3. Competitors entering Intermediate classes may not enter Open classes (Section 1).
  4. Advanced classes are offered for competitors who are studying at the Conservatory Associate Level but have NOT completed the Associate Diploma as of December 31st, 2023. Competitors entering the Advanced section can only have been studying at the ARCT/A.Mus. level for 2 years or less. If the competitor has been studying at this level longer than 2 years they must enter the Open Class.
  5. A competitor in a concerto class may also act as accompanist for another competitor.
  6. All music used in this section must be as listed in the ARCT syllabus. Pieces listed in the licentiate syllabus are not permitted. Pieces that are Grade 10 or lower are not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM lists. Competitors wishing to use Licentiate pieces must enter Open (Section 1).
  7. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  8. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  9. Participants have the option to participate either "in person" or "virtually". This decision must be made at the time of registration.
  10. Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.
  11. All classes in this section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial level of competition (June, 2024) upon adjudicator recommendation. Participants should be aware that 2 pieces are required for the Provincial Finals and that the Provincial's registration deadline will be March 25, 2024.
Class:10030 - Concert Group - ARCT

Entrants are given the opportunity of presenting a mini-recital. They will be judged on the discrimination shown in the choice of programme, as well as on interpretation and technique. Variety in content with regard to period, style, key, etc., will be taken into consideration. A minimum of 3 pieces is required. Please note that this class does not qualify for the Provincial Finals.

Class:10031 - Haydn/Mozart Sonata - ARCT

Any sonata (complete) composed by either Haydn or Mozart. Competitors in this class may not enter Classes 10050-10055.

Class:10032 - Beethoven Sonata - ARCT

An entire sonata drawn from the following list: Op. 2 (No. 2 or 3), Op. 7, 10 (no. 3), 22, 26, Op. 27 (no. 2), Op. 31, 53, 54, 57, 78, 81a, 90, 101, 106, 109, 110, 111. Competitors in this class may not enter Class 10050 or 10051.

Class:10033 - Romantic Composer Sonata (Excluding Beethoven) - ARCT

Any sonata (complete) by a composer of the Romantic period, excluding Beethoven.

One of the following: Ballade; Scherzo; Barcarolle; Fantasie in F minor, Op. 49; Polonaise Fantasy, Op. 61; Grande Polonaise in E flat, op. 22., or any piece written by Chopin as listed in the Current RCM ARCT Syllabus, List C. Repeats MUST be played.

A work (or sections from a grouping) by any one composer allied with the Impressionist School (since 1887) such as Debussy, Delius, Ravel.

Any piece written by a Russian Composer that is not a sonata nor a concerto, written after 1900.

One selection as listed in the Current RCM/Conservatory Canada Piano ARCT, List A requirements. Any standard edition except Schirmer.

Class:10046 - J.S. Bach - 3 contrasting movements from a Suite or Partita

Any 3 contrasting mvts. (to include a slow mvt.) from a Suite or Partita or the Italian Concerto. The Sinfonia of Partita No. 2 will be accepted as 3 mvts.
