Music, Speech Arts & Visual Arts Syllabus - 2025 - Musical Theatre

Duets and Trios

  1. Refer to Rules 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 49, 53, 54, 55, 65 and 80. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Competitors must enter the class corresponding to the age of the oldest member of the duet/trio.
  3. NEW: Participants may enter a class more than once as long as different repertoire is entered. A separate registration is required for each entry.
  4. A piece of music, whether presecribed or own choice, cannot be used by a competitor in more than one class.
  5. Own choice of a song from a music theatre staged production only. Operetta (i.e. Gilbert & Sullivan and Herbert) must be entered into Section 51 and songs from animated or musical films tv shows or movies must be entered into Section 83. Care must be taken to ensure that songs chosen did not appear in movie versions first. For example - The Sound of Music - you will find it was first performed in 1959 on Broadway. The Sound of Music, "Movie" - was first produced in 1965. Therefore, any song from The Sound of Music that was in the Broadway show must go in Musical Theatre. When comparing the two songs lists, however, you will see that "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good" were NOT used in the original Broadway production so they would be eligible for Songs from the Screen and More only. In the 2006 Broadway revival version of The Sound of Music, new songs that have been added to the show such as " How Can Love Survive " and "No Way to Stop it", eg. should be entered in Musical Theatre. For questions about song choice reach out to us at office@kiwanismusictoronto.org.
  6. Selections may be performed in a key suitable for the voice.
  7. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  8. Piano accompaniment only.
  9. Costumes are permitted.
  10. One stage prop and one hand prop are permitted as long as no set-up is required
  11. Participants have the option to participate either "in person" or "virtually". This decision must be made at the time of registration.
  12. Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.
  13. All classes in this section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial level of competition (June, 2025) upon adjudicator recommendation. Participants should be aware that one (1) piece is required for the Virtual Provincial Finals and that the Provincial's registration deadline will be March 30, 2025.
