Solos

  1. Refer to Rules 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 37, 38, 41, 42, 49, 50, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 64 and 80. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of TWO classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  3. NEW: Participants may enter a class more than once as long as different repertoire is entered. A separate registration is required for each entry.
  4. Music choices should be from standard fiddle repertoire, etc.
  5. Pieces must reflect Canadian fiddling styles and place emphasis on traditional fiddling elements. Recognized fiddle styles include but are not limited to: Country, Old Time, Cape Breton, Swing, Métis, Bluegrass, French Canadian etc.
  6. Memorization is required.
  7. The performance should progress from one style to another without pause.
  8. Classical, jazz, blues, trick fiddling, show tunes and other non-traditional fiddle styles are not permitted. ('Double shuffle' is acceptable if it is a traditional part of the song).
  9. Competitors may incorporate improvisation, as long as the original meter and core structure of the piece are preserved. Adjudicators will assess the effectiveness of the improvisation, paying special attention to its adherence to traditional fiddling and Canadian fiddle styles.
  10. An accompanist may choose to chord only.
  11. Competitors will need to provide a transcription of the melody line (could be from a big book or handwritten) and must indicate the title and the composer.
  12. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  13. Participants have the option to participate either "in person" or "virtually". This decision must be made at the time of registration.
  14. Participants who choose the virtual option will be responsible for arranging to have a video recording made of their performance and for creating a YouTube channel that can be shared with the Toronto Kiwanis Festival Office via the online registration system.
  15. All classes in this section are eligible to proceed to the Provincial level of competition which will be held in Kitchener-Waterloo, June 9-14, 2025, upon adjudicator recommendation. Participants should be aware that two (2) pieces are required for the Provincial Finals and that the Provincial's registration deadline will be March 30, 2025
