1. Works will be adjudicated on originality and competence in handling form, harmony, melody and rhythm.
2. Scores must be clear and legible with all bars numbered; photocopies are acceptable. Scores must be received in the Festival Office by January 14th. Entrants are advised to keep a copy.
3. Decisions on winners are reached by the adjudicator reading the scores. Tape recordings will not be considered and should not be submitted. Scores, along with adjudicator reports, marks and certificates will be available the first Monday after the close of Festival competitions.
4. Competitors may enter a maximum of two composition classes. Minimum RCM Grade 4 theory recommended for classes age 19 and over.

2. Instrumentation: any combination of trumpet or cornet, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, guitar or banjo, double bass or tuba, piano, drums. Vocalist is optional.
3. Repertoire: own choice of two contrasting selections within the traditional acoustic jazz tradition (early blues, 'trad' style, Chicago style, New Orleans style, Dixieland, etc.) Compositions may be 'standards' or 'originals'. Solos must be improvised.
4. Time limit 15 minutes.

4. The Festival will not be responsible for the pro-vision of microphones or soundboards. Individual competitors may make their own arrangements for obtaining such equipment.
