Section 1000: Senior Piano Provincial/National Qualifying Class

Section Notes

  1. Must be under the age of 28 as of December 31, 2016.
  2. Perform two consecutive movements from either a sonata or concerto that is at the ARCT, Licentiate or equivalent level as well as a contrasting piece of similar level. What you indicate on your entry form is what you will be expected to play. Make sure that your piece will fit into the time limit as noted in #4 below. (Please note: at least two consecutive movements must be performed at the Provincial Level. The complete piece must be performed at the National Level.)
  3. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  4. Time limit: 45 minutes.
  5. The winner of this class will be asked to play in the President’s Trophy Competition held on Monday, March 20, 2017, competing for a $1,000 grand prize.
  6. It is expected that the 1st and 2nd place winners of the Provincial/National Qualifying Class will proceed to the Provincial Finals (May 28 to June 3, 2017) in Hamilton, ON and if they win there, to then be available to compete at the National Music Festival (August 9-13, 2017) in Ottawa, ON.
  7. Competitors may also enter classes in Sections 1, 2 or 3.
  8. This class is the only senior qualifying class for the President’s Trophy Competition and to be eligible for a recommendation to Provincials/Nationals.
  9. Competitors are also able to enter classes Section 1. Please note, however, that repertoire may not be repeated in other classes.
Section 1000: Senior Piano Provincial/National Qualifying Class

  2. Competitors entering Open classes may not enter Secton 2 (Intermediate) classes.
  3. A competitor in a concerto class may also act as accompanist for another competitor.

  5. All music in this section must be of at least ARCT, Licentiate, or equivalent level (not necessarily on current lists). Grade 10 or lower not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM and Conservatory Canada lists.
  6. Entrants hoping to proceed to Provincial (June, 2017) or National (August, 2017) competitions MUST enter Section 1000.
  7. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of TWO classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.

  9. To be eligible to play in the President’s Trophy Final Competition or to progress to the National class at Provincials you must enter section 1000.
Class SR1-01 – Concerto for Piano & Orchestra – Classical

Class SR1-02 – Concerto for Piano & Orchestra – Romantic or Modern

The first mvt. only of a Concerto by composers such as Brahms, Chopin, Greig, Liszt (one section), MacDowell, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saens, Schumann or Tchaikovsky, or two mvts. of any concerto written after 1910. Class SR1-03 – Piano Solo – Concert Group

Entrants are given the opportunity of presenting a mini-recital. They will be judged on the discrimination shown in the choice of programme, as well as on interpretation and technique. Variety in content with regard to period, style, key, etc., will taken into consideration. A minimum of 3 pieces is required. Competitors in 1-03 may not enter Classes 9-01 to 9-05. Time limit 25 mins

Class SR1-04 – Piano Solo – Haydn/Mozart Sonata

Any sonata (complete) composed by either Haydn or Mozart. Competitors in this class may not enter Classes 4-02 to 4-04.

Class SR1-05 – Piano Solo – Beethoven Sonata

An entire sonata drawns from the following list: Op. 2 (No. 2 or 3), Op. 7, 10 (no. 3), 22, 26, Op. 27 (no. 2), Op. 31, 53, 54, 57, 78, 81a, 90, 101, 106, 109, 110, 111. Competitors in this class may not enter Class 4-01.

Class SR1-06 – Piano Solo – Romantic Composer

Class SR1-08 – Piano Solo – Chopin – Major Work

One of the following : Ballade; Scherzo; Barcarolle; Fantasie in f minor, Op. 49; Polonaise Fantasy, Op. 61; Grande Polonaise in E flat, op. 22., or any piece written by Chopin as listed in the Current RCM ARCT Syllabus, List C. Repeats MUST be played.

Class SR1-09 – Piano Solo – Impressionist

A work (or sections from a grouping) by any one composer allied with the Impressionist School (since 1887) such as Debussy, Delius, Ravel. Time limit 15 mins.

Class SR1-10 – Piano Solo – Early 20th Century (1900 – 1959)

Contemporary music written between the years of 1900 and 1959. Time limit 15 mins.

Class SR1-11 – Piano Solo – Contemporary (1960 – present)

Class SR1-12 – Piano Solo – Sonata

Any Sonata (complete) written after 1900. Time limit 15 mins.

Class SR1-13 – Piano Solo – Canadian Composers

Own choice of a composition written since 1950 by a Canadian composer. Competitors must provide a copy for the adjudicator. If in manuscript form, it must be legible. Time limit 15 mins.

Class SR1-14 – Piano Solo – Russian Composer

Fee: $48.00
Any piece written by a Russian Composer that is not a sonata or a concerto, written after 1900. Time limit 15 mins.

Section 2: Piano Solo – Intermediate – Age 18 & Under

  1. Competitors must be age 18 or under. See Rules 7 and 9. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Competitors entering Intermediate classes may not enter Senior/Open classes (section 1).
  3. A competitor in a concerto class may also act as accompanist for another competitor.
  4. Refer to Rules 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 37 and 40.
  5. This is for younger competitors who are working towards attaining their ARCT and have not yet passed the exam.
  6. All music used in this section must be as listed in the ARCT syllabus. Pieces listed in the licentiate syllabus are not permitted. As well pieces that are Grade 10 or lower are not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM lists. Competitors wishing to use Licentiate pieces must enter Section 1.
  7. Eligible classes for the Provincial competition (June, 2016) in the Diploma class are marked with the letter “P”.
  8. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  9. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
Class INT2-01 – Concerto for Piano & Orchestra – Classical

Any 3 contrasting mvts. (to include a slow mvt.) from a Suite or Partita or the Italian Concerto. The Sinfonia or Partita No. 2 will be accepted as 3 mvts.

Section 4: Sonatas

  3. If competitors enter classes in Section 4 they may enter only one other class in this section and may not enter classes in Section 1 or 2. As well competitors entering any class in section 4 are not permitted to play the same sonata in List B classes in Section 7.

Competitors must play either Ballade #1 or Ballade #4 by Chopin. This is a special class this year honouring the memory of piano teacher Anna Fomina. A $150 scholarship will be awarded to the winner of the class.
