Section 7000: Senior Percussion Solo – Provincial/National Qualifying Class

Section Notes

  1. Must be under the age of 28 as of December 31, 2013.
  2. Perform selections that include minimum of one mvt. of a multi-movement work and one own choice piece that is at the Senior or equivalent level. You may choose to play one or more movements of your selected piece in this class. What you indicate on your entry form is what you will be expected to play. Make sure that your pieces will fit into the time limit as noted in #4 below. (Please note: at least two consecutive movements must be performed at the Provincial Level. The complete piece must be performed at the National Level.)
  3. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  4. Time limit: 45 minutes.
  5. It is expected that the 1st and 2nd place winners of the Provincial/National Qualifying Class will proceed to the Provincial Finals by recording only (June 2017) in Hamilton, Ontario and if they win there, to then be available to compete by recording only at the National Music Festival (August 2017) in Ottawa, ON.
    Provincial Note: You will be playing your National program at the Provincial Festival. In the National competition you will be required to perform TWO selections consisting of: 1. One complete multi-movement work performed at Provincials, and; 2 One multi-percussion work performed at Provincials. 3. One own choice selection performed at Provincials. 4. One own choice selection.
  6. Competitors may also enter classes in Sections 95.
Class 7000 – Percussion Provincial/National Qualifying Class (“P”)

Section 95: Percussion Solos

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 9, 17, 18, 32 and 37. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Competitors may enter a maximum of three classes for the same instrument.
  3. In all Open classes (58-00 to 58-08), selections must be memorized. Memorization is optional in other brass classes.
  4. All music for Open classes (58-00 to 58-08) must be of at least ARCT or level (not necessarily on current lists). Grade 10 or lower not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM and Conservatory Canada lists.
  5. Competitors should be aware that all classes marked with a “P” make a competitor potentially eligible to proceed to the Provincial finals (June, 2016) and for classes T58-00 to T58-08 to the National Music Festival (August, 2015) and all graded pieces must be listed at in either the Current RCM or Conservatory Canada Syllabus.
  6. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  7. The Festival does not make music stands available to competitors in solo or small group classes.
  8. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
Class 95-01 – Percussion Solo – Advanced (“P”)

Fee: $63.00
Three selections consisting of contrasting styles to include works on any two of mallets, tympani or snare drum. Use of other precussion instruments is permissiable but must be provided by the competitor. One selection must be at least two consecutive movements of a multi-movement work. Time limit 40 minutes. Solo percussion pieces must be memorized. Memorization of multi-instrument pieces is encouraged but not required. Piano accompaniment is not permitted.

Class 95-02 – Percussion Solo – Senior (“P”)

Fee: $63.00
Three selections consisting of contrasting styles to include works on any two of mallets, tympani or snare drum. Use of other precussion instruments is permissiable but must be provided by the competitor. One selection must be at least two consecutive movements of a multi-movement work. Time limit 30 minutes. Memorization is encouraged but not required. Piano accompaniment is not permitted.

Class 95-03 – Percussion Solo – Intermediate (“P”)

Fee: $63.00
Two selections consisting of contrasting styles to include works on any two of mallets, tympani or snare drum. Use of other precussion instruments is permissiable but must be provided by the competitor. One selection must be at least two consecutive movements of a multi-movement work. Time limit 30 minutes. Memorization is encouraged but not required. Piano accompaniment is not permitted.

Class 95-04 – Percussion Solo – Junior (“P”)

Fee: $58.00
Two selections consisting of contrasting styles to include works on any two percussion instruments of your choice. Time limit 20 mins. Memorization is encouraged by not required. Piano accompaniment is not permitted.
