Section 120: Original Composition

Section Notes

  1. Works will be adjudicated on originality and competence in handling form, harmony, melody and rhythm.
  2. Scores must be clear and legible with all bars numbered; photocopies are acceptable. Scores must be received in the Festival Office by January 14th. Entrants are advised to keep a copy.
  3. Decisions on winners are reached by the adjudicator reading the scores. Tape recordings will not be considered and should not be submitted. Scores, along with adjudicator reports, marks and certificates will be available the first Monday after the close of Festival competitions.
  4. Competitors may enter a maximum of two composition classes. Minimum Current RCM Grade 4 theory recommended for classes age 19 and over.
  5. Please note that compositions are not performed in this category. See Sections 6 and 68 in this syllabus for performance opportunities.
  6. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.

Class 120-12 – Original Composition – Solo – With Recording

Competitors may submit their composition for solo instrument with a recording of the performance.

Section 86: Recorder Ensembles – NEW!

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 9, 17, 18, 32 and 37. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Own choice classes time limit 7 minutes unless otherwise specified.
  3. School groups are eligible to enter in this Section.
  4. Ensembles are given the choice of EITHER attending the festival “live” or having the option to record the group’s performance and sending it to the festival via dropbox or private youtube link. If recording is chosen, the entry form must still arrive at the office by November 18th. The Recorded portion must be emailed to the office by February 6, 2017.
  5. No accompaniment, piano or otherwise, permitted for ensemble classes, except in classes 86-08, 86-10, 86-12, 86-13, 86-15 and 86-16.
  6. Competitors should be aware that all classes marked with a “P” make a competitor potentially eligible to proceed to the Provincial finals (June, 2017) and for class 85-01 to the National Music Festival (August, 2015) and all graded pieces must be listed at in either the Current RCM or Conservatory Canada Syllabus.
  7. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  8. A test piece, whether prescribed or own choice, cannot be used by a competitor in more than one class. Repertoire which does not coincide with stated categories will result in disqualification. See Rule 38.
  9. The Festival does not make music stands available to competitors in solo or small group classes.
  10. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
