Section 8000: Senior Guitar Solo – Provincial/National Qualifying Class

Section Notes

  1. Must be under the age of 28 as of December 31, 2016.
  2. Perform two or three selections of a senior or advanced work, that may be a multi-movement work, OR at least two consecutive movements of a concerto. ARCT or equivalent level. What you indicate on your entry form is what you will be expected to play. Make sure that your pieces will fit into the time limit as noted in #4 below. (Please note: at least two consecutive movements of the piece you choose must be performed at the Provincial Level. The complete piece must be performed at the National Level.)
  3. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
  4. Time limit: 45 minutes.
  5. The winner of this class will be asked to play in the President’s Trophy Competition held on Monday, March 20, 2017, competiting for a $1,000 grand prize.
  6. It is expected that the 1st and 2nd place winners of the Provincial/National Qualifying Class will proceed to the Provincial Finals (May 28 to June 3, 2017) in Hamilton, Ontario and if they win there, to then be available to compete at the National Music Festival (August 9-13, 2017) in Ottawa, ON.
    Provincial Note: You will be playing your National program at the Provincial Festival.
  7. Competitors may also enter classes in Sections 100.
  8. This class is the only qualifying class for the President’s Trophy and Provincial/National Recommendation.
Class 8000 – Guitar Provincial/National Qualifying Class(“P”)

Fee: $95.00

  1. Own choice selection of a Senior or Advanced work at the ARCT level, that may be a multi-movement work, or at least two consecutive movements from a concerto or concerted work at the ARCT level. Orchestra part to played on second piano.
  2. Own choice of a contrasting selection (a second concerto is not permitted)

Time limit: 45 minutes

Section 100: Classical Guitar Solos – Senior

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 18, 20 and 37. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Competitors should bring their own footstool, if needed.
  3. All music for Open classes (100-01 to 100-07) must be of at least ARCT or equivalent level (not necessarily on current lists). Grade 10 or lower not acceptable. Competitors to check Current RCM lists.
  4. Competitors wishing to proceed to the provincials (Peterborough, June 2017) and the nationals (Ottawa, August 2017) must enter section 8000.
  5. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.
  6. With the exception of class 100-01 – all classes are expected to be without accompaniment.
  7. The Festival does not make music stands available to competitors in solo or small group classes.
  8. Performance times MUST be included on the entry form.
Class SR100-01 – Classical Guitar Solo – Concerto – with Piano – Open

Own choice of one selection of Current RCM ARCT level or higher. Time limit 25 mins. Please note – if you wish the opportunity to progress to the Provincial and National competitions you must enter Class 8000.

Class SR100-02 – Classical Guitar Solo – Contemporary Composition – Open

Class SR100-03 – Classical Guitar Solo – Renaissance Composition – Open

Class SR100-04 – Classical Guitar Solo – Baroque Composition – Open

Own choice of a complete Suite, Sonata or Partita, or any number of mvts. Current RCM ARCT level or higher. Time limit 20 minutes. Please note – if you wish the opportunity to progress to the Provincial and National competitions you must enter Class 8000.

Class SR100-05 – Classical Guitar Solo – Classical or Romantic Composition – Open

Fee: $48.00
Own choice of a complete Sonata or any number of mvts., a theme with variations or a single mvt. work. Current RCM ARCT level or higher. Time limit 20 mins. Please note – if you wish the opportunity to progress to the Provincial and National competitions you must enter Class 8000.

Class SR100-06 – Classical Guitar Solo – Spanish or South American – Open

Own choice of one selection of Current RCM ARCT level or higher. Time limit 20 mins. Please note – if you wish the opportunity to progress to the Provincial and National competitions you must enter Class 8000.

Class SR100-07 – Classical Guitar Solo – Canadian Composition – Open

Fee: $48.00
Own choice of a complete Suite or Sonata or any number of mvts., or a single mvt. work by a Canadian composer. Time limit 20 mins. Competitors may wish to use the resources of the Canadian Music Centre, 20 St. Joseph St., Toronto M5Y 1J9. Tel (416) 961-6601. Please note – if you wish the opportunity to progress to the Provincial and National competitions you must enter Class 8000.

Section 101: Classical Guitar Solos – Introductory to Grade 10

Section Notes

  1. Refer to Rules 18, 20 and 37. Read all Syllabus rules with care.
  2. Competitors should bring their own footstool, if needed.
  3. Time limit 5 minutes unless otherwise specified.
  4. Competitors should be aware that all classes marked with a “P” make a competitor potentially eligible to proceed to the Provincial finals (June, 2016) and for classes 58-00 to 58-08 to the National Music Festival (August, 2015) and all graded pieces must be listed at in either the Current RCM or Conservatory Canada Syllabus.
  5. To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of two classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.

  3. Maximum performance time – 7 Minutes.
  4. Music choices DO NOT have to be from RCM or Conservatory Canada Lists.
  5. Solo performance only – no accompaniment.
  6. Charts or tabs are permitted, however full scores are preferred.
  7. Photocopies are strictly prohibited.
  8. All performances must be from memory.
  9. Repeats can be played as long as performance time remains within the maximum allotted.
  10. Can be either acoustic or electric guitar. If using electric – please note that amps will not be provided. Contact Long & McQuade for rental enquiries if you do not own your own.
